Religious Practices or the Presence of Christ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words of Ministry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
John 2:19 Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this
temple, and in three days I will raise it up. (20) Then the
Jews said, This temple was built in forty-six years, and You
will raise it up in three days? (21) But He spoke of the
temple of His body.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words of Ministry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The contrast between religion and God's economy [plan] can be
illustrated by the Lord's human living. When the Lord Jesus
was on earth, the temple with all its rituals, practices, and
ordinances was still in Jerusalem. In the temple the priests
presented the offerings, burned the incense, and lighted the
lamps. However, God was not in the temple—He was in the Lord
Jesus. Sometimes the Lord stayed in the home of Lazarus,
Martha, and Mary in Bethany. He visited with them and spoke
with them in a normal, human way. Nevertheless, while He was
in that house in Bethany, the priests continued to perform the
rituals in the temple. With the priests in the temple we see
the practice of religion, but with the Lord in Bethany we see
God's economy. God's economy is to work Himself into man.
His economy was carried out not in the temple, but in that
house in Bethany, for there Christ, the embodiment of the
fullness of God, was present. Those who worshipped in the
temple were practicing their religion, but Lazarus, Martha,
and Mary enjoyed the presence of the Lord Jesus. The local
churches today should not be like the temple in Jerusalem, but
be like that home in Bethany. This means that the churches
should not be places of religion, but be places where God's
economy is being carried out.

Curriculum
Sciencing
Finding the right one
I just had a conversation with my husband's brother and his wife about where to send their kid to school in Metro Manila. I cannot help but give them my criteria for a GREAT school.- and you all know I wont send my child to a mediocre school. The school might just meet all my requirements. Here are some of my points.
1. Standard Based Education.
I believe tat a school that begins with the end in mind guides and leads our children better. I want a school that is driven to meet their goals and objectives. I want a school that is passionate about their mission and vision and does not just take each day as if its an ordinary day. I want a school that sees everyday as an opportunity to change the world, make a difference in our children's lives and achieve our common goals.
I want a school that has specific standards per level- as we all know standards are simply the backbone of the curriculum. Standards are basically what we have to achieve and what our children needs to achieve to meet the BIGGER goal 10 years from now.
2. Updated.
I want a school that is constantly upgrading themselves- to gain all the best practices there is in education. I want a school that updates their standards, curriculum and teacher development.
3. Teaching Styles
I want a school that have varied teaching styles- uses technology and other alternatives in teaching. I want a school for my kids where they can be who they are and learn.
4. Security.
Ofcourse, security. We all want a safe school.
5. Life long learning
I want a school that instills love for learning. I want a school that teaches skills needs to thrive in the real world- thinking skills, creativity, resourcefulness, diligence. No more of those memorization stuff. I want more thinking skills.
6. Discipline, Values Formation
Yes. I need a school that instills proper character to my kids. I want them to instill work ethics - that we need to be successful. And, yes , you get that in school. Not all school teaches children ethics and etiquette. But a great school does.
7. Small student-teacher ratio.
8. No discrimination.
9. Student-centered, not parent-centered.
Oh, by the way, its so hard to find great schools. So, when you find it, appreciate and thank everyone who's in it. :) Good thing there's Oakridge in Dagupan City. If we're based in Manila and theres no Oakridge in Manila, I would be miserable- finding the right school- the best school for Nathan.

learning experiences
SUPPORT AND PATIENCE
Dear Parents,
As we move from paper-pencil, memorization driven education to a more critical thinking, success driven education, We are in a state where we experience learning experiences, challenges and overcoming fears and struggles. It has always been said what people refuse things that they dont understand. But we have to go beyond that. We have to face the truth that we need an educational reform to prepare our children to become successful. We cannot raise them in a “bahala na” system where everything is tolerated. Its about time that we execute change.
But my dear oakridge Parents, we need your partnership, cooperation and patience. We cannot do it on our own. We need your support as we work towards this goal. We can never master or perfect procedures and plicies in our first try. But one thing for sure, through collaboration and parent support, we can make it. Oakridge is not about me. Oakridge is about our families working together to build a better, progressive Philippines. I hope we go beyond our fears, our impressions, the color of our skin, our culture, our presumptions and start focusing and thinking what really matters.
Grades are grades. If grades will get us to be CEO of Google in the next 20 years, probbaly it is important. But it wont. Grades in Gradeschool and Middle School doesnt even affect our College and University acceptance. What matters is learning, understanding and application of knowledge, skills, attitude and values. And these are what we do at Oakridge. We focus on learning and deviate from unnecessary things like grades, honor roll and memorization. We focus on the WHOLE CHILD.
wish it was like this all the time in the Philippines
Have you ever wished that we have parks? we have museums? we have tourist spots that are well maintained and restored? I wish that it was like that all the time in the Philippines- where we can actually go to museums every Saturday and read and stroll, where theres more to Manila than Mall of Asia and other Shopping Malls. I wish we can just walk in the park on a Saturday morning, have a cup of coffee in one of those little dainty cafe in the Metro Dagupan and watch our kids play.Wish it was like this everyday in Dagupan. :(

My cynical self again
OIS doing AVID

that's right! Oakridge is finally doing it! We'll be doing AVID starting SY 2012-13.
AVID is a college readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in and persist in four-year colleges. Today, AVID has been adopted by approximately 4,800 schools in 48 states, the District of Columbia and 16 countries/territories, and serves more than 425,000 students, grades 4-12 and at the postsecondary level.
The AVID College Readiness System (ACRS) incorporates three distinct components - AVID Elementary,AVID Secondary (Elective) and AVID Postsecondary. Each component addresses the needs of students to help bridge the path from elementary school through postsecondary completion.

We have to do something
Tuesday, December 6, 2011

We'll be having soccer tomorrow. For the past weeks, we have canceled soccer again and again because of the lack of WAIVER. Tom (Mr. Watson) doesnt really feel comfortable having the kids go to Lingayen or San Marino without a waiver. He's just being protective and pro-active. And I really understand that. I just hope the kids and the parents appreciate him. What makes my situation difficult is that I know that he is doing everything for the school and for the kids. But the parents and the students feel that he is too protective and stiff. I just hope they could see that he is a great person. I have come to understand, appreciate and accept Tom. He is actually one of the structured person Ive met. Talk about what our country needs. Seriously. Sometimes it is just so hard to explain to parents how important it is for us to know and appreciate boundaries, policies, limitations, roles, standards and even structure. I dont really know if its because as a nation, as citizens, we have learned to "adjust", remedy everything to fit our need. To a certain effect it is true. But this skill, this talent has caused us to learn how to escape rules, talk our way out of traffic violations, not follow simple rules, etc. Have you ever tried crossing the street without a pedestrian, when theres a walkway a few steps away? Have you ever attended late in a class and think 5 minutes lang naman? Guys, all these things we need to fix. Have you ever done something because it is convenient and not because its right? All the time. Its not who our President is and what his programs are. Its putting our foot down, follow our laws for the first time and learn to do things the right way.

I started teaching last week. I started out as a substitute. But it turned out great. Im loving each day I spend with the kids. I'd rather teach than do admin work. Seriously! I just cant believe how intelligent, inquisitive young children can be. They give me concepts, thoughts, ideas that great fairytales and stories are made of. Well, teaching literature and reading to children is one thing. I havent really taught reading and literature to young kids. But it turns out to be so much fun.
